Bio

Dr. Bonilla is the Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Illinois. He also is Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. A Chicago native, he attended St. Ignatius College Prep and then the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1989 and continued at the University of Illinois for residency in General Surgery in 1995. During that time he was also a Research Fellow in the Trauma Surgery Department at Cook County Hospital. Dr. Bonilla then completed in 1997 his Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center and subsequently joined Cardiac Surgery Associates.

Dr. Juan Bonilla is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with extensive experience in complex cardiac procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting,mitral valve repair and replacement, and advanced surgical management of heart failure. Known for a meticulous, patient-centered approach, Dr. Bonilla combines technical precision with thoughtful clinical judgment to deliver consistently high-quality outcomes.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bonilla has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in both operative performance and multidisciplinary collaboration. He has contributed to quality improvement initiatives, mentored trainees, and remained actively engaged in continuing medical education to stay at the forefront of evolving surgical techniques and evidence-based care.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Bonilla’s professional philosophy is grounded in the belief that cardiovascular health extends well beyond surgical intervention. He emphasizes the importance of lifestyle as a foundational component of long-term wellness. Yoga and Tai Chi are central to his personal practice, supporting balance, flexibility, mindfulness, and stress reduction, all critical factors in cardiovascular health. He also follows and advocates for a nutritional approach rooted in Mediterranean principles and plant-based nutrition, emphasizing whole foods, healthy fats, and sustainable dietary habits that promote longevity and overall well-being.
