Bio

Dr. Bonilla is Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, Illinois. He also is Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. A Chicago native, he attended St. Ignatius College Prep and then the University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1989 and continued at the University of Illinois for residency in General Surgery in 1995. During that time he was also a Research Fellow in the Trauma Surgery Department at Cook County Hospital. Dr. Bonilla then completed in 1997 his Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center and subsequently joined Cardiac Surgery Associates, continuing his activities as Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Bonilla has special interest in less invasive approaches to cardiac surgery. Dr. Bonilla is also an active triathlete, having completed the Ironman in Wisconsin as well as numerous triathlete competitions. He also is a competitive master swimmer and runner. He enjoys painting and drawing, and his art is in several private collections. Dr. Bonilla has been married to a beautiful wife for over 15 years and they have three wonderful daughters.
